Just when I start thinking we have things reasonably under control, we go and have a night like tonight.
Matthew is trying to win a prize for crabbiest baby ever, I think.
Luke woke him up not once, not twice, but THREE times today.
At 11 pm both kids were still awake, crying, and hadn't really been to bed yet.
Luke decided he HATES the new pull ups I bought him with a passion, so 9 pm was not a good time to use the last regular diaper. (I may be able to scrounge up a couple in the car if it ever stops raining and/or I get desperate.) I didn't buy regular diapers because I bought pull ups for night time/naps. Joe made him wear a pull up and he screamed like he had been set on fire complete with some pathetic "MAMAs".
It was just bad.
The baby is finally asleep and it is quiet so hopefully the two year old is too.
I really really hope they sleep in tomorrow.

A lot of stuff.
Potty training is not going so swimmingly. Part of the problem is that I pretty much hate dealing with it. Yesterday was okay, Luke had 2 accidents in underwear but used the potty 4 or 5 times. The problem was that the times he had an accident in his underwear, it didn't really bother him all that much and he was pretty darn ticked that I made him stop watching Barney to clean him up! Fail.
Today he decided he didn't want to wear underwear (even with cars on them, which btw, is pretty much the only stupid choice in stores right now..going to have to look online.) But he didn't want to wear a diaper either. (I could "make him", except he can take off diapers and take off underwear so that is pretty pointless.) So...he was a nudist all morning and that actually went pretty well. He used the potty a couple of times, then we had to go so I put a diaper on him, he didn't exactly keep it dry.
Meh. I'm kind of over it. I think I'll keep putting him in underwear when we're home and trying to keep getting him to use the potty (which he almost always does if we ask, but he doesn't really ever initiate), and back off. We are going on vacation in a few weeks and I hate being stuck at home.
Luke has gotten really really interested in counting all of a sudden. He is so random about it though. He will go "two, four, six!" (Tonight at dinner with my mom and brother Joe and I were joking that he's a child genius counting by two's already!) Then the next minute he'll be counting "two, three, four, six!" He never says one, he almost never says five, and sometimes if we start counting he'll just throw "six!" out there randomly. So, it's very much a work in progress. He just started being interested in it all of a sudden though, it's crazy how fast they come up with this stuff. He really likes watching us write letters and name them. Tonight during dinner he kept making my brother write out names and say the letters for him. A lot of times he will talk over us for the letters, like I will write his name and say "L" U"K"E", and he will say, "A" "E" "R" "T", very emphatically and seriously like he's right and we are wrong. (Gee, I wonder where he gets that from! Couldn't be my husband who talked our trivia night team out of the right answer because he was POSITIVE his answer was right.) Anyway, tonight as my brother was doing the names/letters, he just watched him intently and said "More!" any time he finished instead of arguing over the letters. I'm not really all that concerned about it either way, it's just funny and crazy how all of a sudden he is so fascinated by it all.
Matthew.Matthew.Matthew.
He is working on like 3 teeth at once. He is a crabby mess most of the time when he's awake, except if Luke happens to glance his way. I'm actually considering taking him to the doctor just for being a crabby mess if he doesn't chill out soon. He is kicking my butt. The one thing he is doing great at is eating. He loves anything and everything we feed him. He cries in between spoonfuls if we don't shovel it in fast enough. He is already up to 3 "meals" a day. Luke was a good eater early on too, but not this good. For cheap entertainment, I like putting puffs on his high chair tray and watch him try to get them in his hands. He is nowhere close to having the "pincer grasp", it is so so funny watching him open and close his palm trying to catch one, then if he happens to get it stuck to his palm, getting it to his mouth doesn't really happen.
The best moment of my day today was giving both boys a bath together and watching them play (well, holding Matthew up and closely supervising because Luke can be mean and will try to dump a cup full of water over Matthew's head if I'm not rightthere to catch it.) Anyway, I just really love watching them play and interact with each other. We definitely have had our rough moments these past 7 (!) months, but it is really nice to be able to do stuff like that and have them play together. Watching them laugh at each other is pretty much the best thing ever.

Noisy house
Sounds from this morning with Luke playing around the train set on our coffee table:
"Choo choo".
(mumbles something I couldn't hear) "peas."
He adds a piece to the train, then tells himself, "thank eww"
and hardly before pausing, "er welcome!"
Then starts clapping his hands, "I did it!"
Then he starts pushing the train some more, "Bye, see ya ater"
I didn't realize how much he talks when playing with his trains till now when I sat listening while feeding Matthew.
Earlier this week, he got into the kitchen (we try to keep him out because he's just trouble in there.) He managed to get into a loaf of bread and dump the entire loaf on the floor, out of the bag. Without missing a beat, he pats his hands together and says, "There! All done." Like that was his intention all along.
And then the clocks. EVERYWHERE we go, he has taken to spotting clocks, pointing them out, and saying emphatically "COCKS! COCKS!" So far, it's been pretty much okay, I repeat, "yes honey, there's a cLock!" One of these days that's going to be really awkward though, I'm sure of it.
And then Matthew recently discovered his shrieky voice. He doesn't cry normal for long now before he launches into a full-scale shriek. I wish he would babble a little bit more but I get paranoid about that kind of stuff, and I don't remember exactly when between 6 and 9 months that really starts happening more. (He does look at us and make sounds sometimes, just not real "babbling" yet.) He is also eating solids now like he's been eating food his whole life. He just gobbles it all up, anything he's tried. He has also been sleeping in his crib all week and doing pretty well with it. Not making it the entire night, yet, but he will even wake up a bit when I lay him down and still go back to sleep if I turn on his glowworm and pat his back and then slowly sneak out.
Fun times around here!

I guess we are potty training
After taking a week or so "off" from mentioning the potty, I started having Luke sit on it every time we have been in the bathroom (since he has to come keep me company any time I go in there, even if it's just something like giving Matthew a bath.) Anyway, all week, every time he has sat, he ends up peeing.
Then in the past few days he started saying "change! change!" anytime his diaper needed changed.
Then this evening he started trying to take off his dry diaper, I asked him if he needed to potty and he said yes, then he proceeded to go (and sorry for the TMI but not just pee this time!)
He really likes going pee and then dumping the bowl in the regular toilet and flushing, so that helps.
I really wanted to wait a bit longer then this (Matthew is all shrieky right now, we go on vacation at the end of June, etc.) but basically the kid is really close to potty training himself. As much as he hates being the tiniest bit wet (like if he dribbles water on his shirt drinking, he flips out till he can get the shirt off), I don't anticipate the transition to underwear being very difficult beyond an accident or two.
We badly need new furniture, ours is torn and just meh, so I guess it's a good thing we haven't picked anything out yet. (Only because it's really hard for us to agree on what we want and we both keep changing our minds.)
So I guess this weekend and next week will be underwear boot camp. I have done this a time or 15 before with daycare kids, and know that the "boot camp" is really on me. But seriously the kid could not be more obviously ready. I do not want him to stop doing what he is doing now.
My baby is growing up way too fast!

Mother's Day...
To the tiny little girl who first made me a mom...
We love you and miss you so very much. I think of you every single day.
To the little boy who wakes up saying "MOOOMMMMMM?" "Mom?" "Mama?", who likes using his crayons on the windows when he manages to sneak-hide one, who still cuddles on my lap, and chases bunnies and birds all over the yard and our dogs all over the house...
Thank you for teaching me to smile again. For making me laugh every day. For reminding me of what's important. I am so glad I get to be home with you each day as you discover the world around you. You have taught me so much.
To the baby boy who gives me big almost-toothless grins and is iffy on letting anyone else hold him especially if he realizes it's not me...
I love your baby giggles and holding you and watching you observe the world around you. You are growing up so fast, I can close my eyes and already see you playing cars on the floor and running around with your brother. But even with the sleepless nights and teething and all that stuff, I am so glad you have months and months of babyness left. It does go too fast.
And to my mom. Who has seen me at my best and worst and would do anything for her family. There is no way to ever thank her enough for all she has done and does, but I hope I can be half as good of a mom to my kids as she has been to us.

Oh my.
It has been eventful around here.
We've had Luke's birthday party, their first Cardinals game, a whole lot of sick and doctor's appointments +antibiotics x2 kids and shots x2 kids, then birthday parties to go to, etc. Busy busy busy.
Matthew started solids this week. So far just avocado and sweet potatoes. He wasn't crazy about the avocado but gobbled down the sweet potatoes. He thinks sitting in Luke's high chair (just the space saver one attached to a chair) is hilarious and awesome. Luke doesn't seem to mind it and likes to talk and play with him in it. But now I need to figure out a chair for Luke stat.I really want the Tripp Trapp but don't like the price and they never come up used here.
I have been contemplating starting to potty train Luke, he will tell us when he's wet/dirty and even take his diaper off and bring it to us. I didn't want to during his birthday stuff, then we've been sick, then Thursday we are going to the zoo so I was going to hold off until next week. (Plus I worked with 2 year olds and have helped potty train quite a few, it's a pain, I just want to put off dealing with it a little bit longer.) In the meantime, we did get a potty and have let Luke sit on it and casually talked up pottying on it just to get the concept started before we go all out into underwear/etc. He has never gone but liked sitting on it then saying all done and getting up, which was fine.
Just as I was thinking we will wait till next week, tonight Luke took off his shorts and dry diaper, went in the bathroom when Joe asked if he wanted too, then peed in the potty. We made a huge deal out of it. Then an hour later, he took his diaper off again, but this time went in the bathroom on his own, sat on the potty and peed again.
So, I guess we'll be potty training VERY soon though we'll probably try to wait at least till the weekend to really go all out with it. I am glad we have held off on buying new furniture and I planned to touch up the carpets soon anyway.
Today we went out to Purina Farms which is free in our area. They have a huge barn with cows, horses, goats, pigs, sheep, chicken, ducks, bunnies, plus dogs and cats and dog shows. They had a petting area with a chicken and bunny loose plus two piglets in a playpen type thing. Luke thought it was the greatest place ever. He kept running back and forth between all the animals, petting them, yelling "look! look!" Unfortunately we just let my mom take pictures with her DSLR which I should have known was a mistake b/c she is really camera-dumb. She has had it over 2 years now and still doesn't know how to look back and see the pictures she took. (I have showed her at least twice and I only haveonly had a cheap point and shoot camera.) Anyway, none of the pictures came out very well, but it was a nice day and we had a blast!
